HOW WE REDUCE ENERGY NEEDS So how do we achieve a 50% to 70% reduction in a home's energy use? The answer is not incredibly efficient appliances, super windows, or double-thick insulation. The savings are the result of a carefully planned whole house design and sound onsite construction practices. HCD knows that a house is a collection of many components including insulated walls and ceilings, heating & air conditioning units, appliances, lighting, and many, many others. When you add all of these components together they form a home, but they are also a complex system with many of the individual pieces impacting the functionality of other pieces. The key is to create a plan for and use the right components that most cost effectively reduce energy use.
