The Science of HCD Homes

HOW WE REDUCE ENERGY NEEDS

So how do we achieve a 50% to 70% reduction in a home's energy use? The answer is not incredibly efficient appliances, super windows, or double-thick insulation. The savings are the result of a carefully planned whole house design and sound onsite construction practices.

HCD knows that a house is a collection of many components including insulated walls and ceilings, heating & air conditioning units, appliances, lighting, and many, many others. When you add all of these components together they form a home, but they are also a complex system with many of the individual pieces impacting the functionality of other pieces. The key is to create a plan for and use the right components that most cost effectively reduce energy use. When all of these components are added together the result is a highly energy efficient, better built home.

Just a few of the pieces of the new home puzzle that we analyze include:

  • The thermal envelope of the home which is simply the barriers between the conditioned space within your home and the outdoors. This area has several pieces within it including insulation and sealing against air leakage.
  • The heating and cooling systems are another important consideration. Most people have heard that a more energy efficient HVAC system will save them money on their utility bills which is very true. However, it is just as if not more beneficial to have a properly sized and engineered system for your specific home.
  • Water heating uses a lot of energy. In most homes the energy is being spent even when you are not using hot water. There are several strategies and products available that can significantly reduce the amount of energy used for this task.
