These bulbs are usually quite a bit more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, but they may last more than 4x as long while using less than 1/4 the energy. These bulbs are readily available at most retailers.
Water Heater Blanket - This is another easy to implement tip that can save you a lot of money on your energy costs especially if your water is heater is located in an unconditioned area of your home. A water heater blanket is simply a roll of insulation that is sized to wrap around your water heater and provide an extra level of insulation. Since the water heater must continually monitor the temperature of the water in the tank and work to keep the water hot, cutting down on the heat loss from the tank will result in lower energy use. This is important because water heaters on average account for 13% of a home's total energy usage. These products are available at home retailers that also sell water heaters.
HVAC Maintenance - To work at it's most efficient level your home's heating and air conditioning system must be properly maintained. The most common form of maintenance involves regularly checking and replacing the air filter. A clean air filter helps ease the flow of air through the system, keeps the equipment clean to help ensure long system life, and helps keep dust and other allergens out of the air for a healthier home environment. You should check your air filter at least once a month and replace it when it appears to be too dirty. Air filters are available at many home supply stores. Just remember to check the size of your filter before you go shopping!
